FREE RUM!!!!!!!!!

I propose that we have an unofficial PD division in the 3BF this year. As some of you may recall I have done this before for another web site for 3 or 4 years with great results so this year lets do it BIGGER and BETTER!!! I will volunteer to be the “PD race committee” and as such will provide a minimum of 3 first place prizes in the form of 3 bottles of “semi” good Rum and if we have enough entrees I’ll up that #. Now anyone else what to put up some prizes? PB just volunteered a few PD T-shirts (since I have them in the trunk of my truck).
To start off I think the first 3 divisions should be 1) S/H, 2) D/H and 3) Moore 24 if we get enough entrees I see adding MH and other OD classes.
Easy enough to join just post boat name and requested division here and you are in!! This year I hope I will not have to take PM entrees for skippers who wish not to be associated with the hosting web site as I have in the past!!

So tell your friends tell your enemies heck tell you bondsman for all I care but lets get an EPIC # of boat involved!! After all you are going to be doing the race anyway why not go for a free bottle O Grog???

There might also be some traction in the SC 27 fleet………….Get 5+ boats to join and get your own Bottle O Grog to battle for!!

Hi All,

Put down Hapa Girl in the Singlehanded division this year. After 4-5 years of DH it's time to try this one on my own.

Try not to laugh when you see me struggling with the kite or some other craziness out there.

Hapa Girl will be in the SH Multihull division, rating 30

I'll check the tag next time I'm in the warehouse, G. According to the Zhik site, "Approved to European CE standard EN 393 50 N..."

These PFDs are super popular with the small boat guys, and getting more so with the big boat guys. These suckers are super comfy.

Last year it was Scott Easom on his Moore-24. Early enough start so one can see which way he's going, yet fast and smart enough to be a good lead-dog. It was astounding to watch him "depart" the starting area on that giant veering SE wind last year!!

Not sure I'd call it "wrong way" or that the bottle should be empty. Some years the first and second place boats have come from opposite directions and finished within seconds of each other. Both sailed very smart races (or found acorns?).

I'm sensing angst in your reply. Perhaps a healthy serving of "dried plums" would help you. I agree with you on the motor thingy - to a point. In my view, every pound saved by not having a motor thingy on the boat is a pound that could be occupied by rum.

Now, isn't that a better way to look at it?

With the snow pac in the Sierra approaching 210% of "normal" for this year, or to put it another way 4.5 TIMES what it was last year, I'm guessing there will be a LOT of freshwater exiting the bay for our little race amongst the SF Channel markers.... see you all at the Light Ship.

How does that line go: Signing up for races is like using the head - the job isn't finished 'til the paperwork's done.

The paperwork isn't done but J/92 "Ragtime!" will be singlehanded and so far, me, Mr. Hands, Desdemona, and Wet Spreaders ("Akula") are in the J Boat division. I'll see how many J's we get but I might get two bottles for SH vs. DH.

Hooboy, the captain and I are starting to plan our pre-start maneuvering. This year we have decided to get to the race course on time and not try to eke our way to the line from the wrong side on port tack in front of all the Moore 24s as they start. The key to this strategy is to not stop in the middle of the bay and ogle at the spectacle which is the line and actually plan ahead a bit. Oh, and to not almost hit the freakin' pin at the start would help too.

I do think this time I'm going to inspect the spinnaker before the race. I don't want to have to find out if a mouse counts as an additional crewmember.

The starting area will be really crowded - it was very tough to navigate last year. I wonder whether it's time for the RC to add another starting area - perhaps at Redrock or East of TI - and give people a choice of where to start.

anybody got wind forecast(ed)?

BobJ
01-25-2011, 08:28 AM
Here's NOAA's line: Saturday: Variable winds less than 5 kt becoming W 6 to 11 kt in the morning. Partly sunny.

That's not a bad idea, Spreaders - it would also add tactical options which is what this race is about.

Another idea: In a drifter, they could consider changing the starting line restriction to 100 yards or 10 minutes (currently 50 yards and 5 minutes). This would allow boats to get on in there, start, and hopefully clear out. One year I was in the middle of the entire Express 27 fleet (rating 129) because they hadn't crossed the line when I came in to start with my 105-rater. I realize this could cut both ways, but often you can't sail 50 yards in 5 minutes and you are forced to start late. While it seems it would put more boats in the starting area, it might actually allow more boats to clear OUT of the starting area by being able to start on time.

Or not.

PD T-Shirts limited quantity available at the awards on a first come first serve basis.

Surf City Racing has offered a Size M way cool life vest – And for this years twist I propose that it is awarded to a D/H crew person as nominated by their skipper here. To nominate a crew member post a short reason why they deserve to win (or need a life vest). Best story/reason will be decided by a vote on this forum.

1) Wet Spreaders' boat name is Akula.

2) Ragtime! can live with the possibility of winning TWO bottles O rum.

3) Great idea on the life vest.

I just did some math - there are 48 boats, of an average length of 38ft starting from +2mins to -2mins of the J105s. For a OD start, the recommended situation is 1.5x the sum of the boat lengths in a start. Everyone goes the same direction too, which makes it a bit easier.

So, with 38x48x1.5, we get to 2736 ft. The line (hastily measured using Google Earth) is 740ft long. So, we're going to have 4x more boat, going in 2 directions, all within clipping distance of the J105 fleet, in current and no breeze. I sense a Fiasco indeed!

You'll find me close hauled, on starboard somewhere near the buoy - At least then I can bail out if there's no gap.

Due to popular demand (I hope) we are extending the cut off to join the PD U,U,U 3BF race divisions. Like any race that will allow late entries there is a small fee ** that will be charged to all late entries but I think you will all find it fair and it will not discourage anyone from joining in the fun!!

** Late entry fee is you must buy a drink or beer for a member of the SSS 3BF race committee or a volunteer who worked on the race deck!! Please note this fee will be on the honor system but who needs bad Karma these days?

A little more info. There are going to be approximately 30 swimmers and 20 support boats (mostly rowboats, at least 2 RIBs). One thing to keep in mind, open water swimmers usually wear matching neon colored caps to help spot them (don't count on it but look for it). If they have a wetsuit, they are harder to see; i don't know if this race has a non-wetsuit division.

I probably know a few of these guys, please don't hit them.

For those that missed the meeting, please note that you will be sharing the water with swimmer going from MacCovey Cove to Aquatic Park, approximately 9:00 to 11:00. Keep an eye out for their support boats, make eye contact with the operators, and give them room.

It's not US Masters who usually organizes these things (so it's likely they're not friends of mine now and hitting them won't offend me personally :) ). I'm going to check with some open water swimmer friends.

From an open water swimming nut:

"There's nothing that I know about going on this weekend, maybe the South End Rowing Club or Dolphin Club is having a private event? I can't imagine it'd be too big considering the water temps right now. The other possibilities would be like Swim-Art.com or WaterWorldSwim.com having something going on, but best I can tell they're not up to anything right now either. Sorry I don't have anything more exciting for you!"

Maybe it's part of a triathlon? Those guys are weird.

hey War Dog, I stumbled onto PD while cruising SA today looking for the unofficial race inside the race. Was fun last year, glad to find you over here this year. Any easy way to upload vids from the race course for the armchair sailors in the cold part of the world to enjoy while we're out there?

We've got a scheme up our sleeves to run streaming video of the line on our home page during the starting sequence (possibly resuming during finishes), so that fans, family and friends can watch at home. A computer (not a mobile device) is recommended, and you may need to install QuickTime if you don't already have it. We're also soliciting video clips from sailors underway, which we will post as the day's racing progresses. They can be emailed to our video department.

WD, thanks for the welcome and as usual we look forward to seeing you and everyone else crashing into each other tomorrow.

aA,
It was only a matter of time before I ended up here. Unfortunately, I’ve been out of touch for a while because of the extensive amount of therapy I had to go through dealing with my new found multiness. Sure, you grow up thinking you’re mono all the way, but little by little there’s this nagging feeling that builds up and you know something is not right. At first, I thought it was just a worn harness crushing my junk, but it wasn’t. Tried sportboats and that didn’t help.
The family was really not pleased. My dad told me “I was dead to him” and tried to get me thrown into one of those Scared Mono programs the church has. I faked as if it worked, but last year he saw the pictures on the interweb. Right there for everyone to see was Multihauler and me sailing in the 3BF on Three Sigma. Doesn’t get any more graphic than that. Trampolines, amas, mast-derotators, screachers – yeah, the whole show. Why dad picked Easter dinner to throw a big pile of 8x10 glossies in front of the rest of the family is beyond me. My mother has aged ten years in the past six months trying the come to grips with the whole ordeal. What’s the big deal?
Thought my wife was going to be a problem, but turns out she’s multi too. The little minx.
So I been kind of busy.

aA

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA! aren't interventions just the best?

Beetle would like to sign up in pressure drop division doublehanded, and if we get to make up our own division then I will suggest 'IOR Warhorse', as there won't be that many of them out there and then I might have a better chance of looking good in Unofficial Division race results :)

On another note, have a good race out there people, and please give room to VALIS, we are sailing a big boat and are really not that good at it.

We don't want to sound like mom but the RC have posted this list:

The Top Ten.

1. Read the SSI's and SI's carefully.

2. Check in with boat name and sail number only. (Even sail numbers on VHF 68, Odd sail numbers on VHF 69.)

3. The starting line is restricted until 5 minutes before your start. This will be enforced.

4. If over early do not restart. You will get a twenty minute penalty instead.

5. Do not go into restricted areas. You can not "unwind" once in a restricted area. See the SSS website for restricted area chartlets.

6. The start/finish line is not restricted but* please radio the RC to let us know you are just crossing to get to another mark.

7. Running lights must be on at sunset.

8. Please radio in just before you finish to help the RC figure out who you are.

9. If you drop out, radio in on VHF 69. If no response call the SSS voicemail and leave your boat name and sail number and the time.
You must check out by notifying the RC or you will be in trouble. Don't just go home.

10. Have fun.

Also: The only way we can fairly score this race is help from you. Do not be afraid to point out any problems with start/finish times or any other discrepancies. We will do our best to make it right.

Can I help sort this out? Since I'm jealous of the boats sailing DH with spouses, S/O's etc., and I probably owe Eyrie a bottle of rum anyway for running the 2008 Solo TransPac, I'll buy a second bottle and suggest a "one-or-two D's" division. (My first bottle is for the winning J Boat.)

You need to understand Eyrie is likely gonna win it because 'Zia has the Sailor Jerry's gal tatooed on her arm (I'm serious) and she and Sylvia can sail that boat blindfolded etc., but those of you with a dame aboard can try. If I'm missing something here WD (I usually am) just let me know.

WD was on his drinking ke-board this evening so we may not get this resolved tonight. If he goes with my suggestion of a "1 or 2 D's Division" we should have enough entries. Zingaro (Tuna), Zingara (the Mrs.), Eyrie (S&S), Kapi'i on Beetle (and maybe RobM in drag), and if necessary we can steal one boat from the E27 division - I count four with D's aboard. But it's WD's call.

Well THAT was cold and icky.....finally can feel my fingers again...

Started off with PNW Guest photog and myself meeting the 1st Santana 22's this AM near Aquatic Park...then the Moores then bunches and bunches of boats...
They all decided to park just off the city front for a while...

Pick up a "Nut" at GGYC and shadowed Shadow for a while, then Adrenaline and Rocket 88....moseyed over to Raccoon about Noonish...Front started to
appear and it got wet and viz when bye bye..did See the 1st Red Rocks rounder, (will have to look at pics for name) another Santana 22 near South Hampton...

Viz got worse and heading back to City Front, could not see jack... or jill, or much of anything for that matter... Dropped of two wet/cold passengers at GGYC...
And started back...Came across most of the fleet STILL off Pier 39 Aquatic Park... The most advanced pack had made it across the river and were struggling on the East side of Yerba Buena...Several were throwing in the towel...it now being close to 2:00 pm...

Head back towards the South Bay and viz got betterer, temp warmer...then another band rolled through...

Pics later.. time to go huddle around the wood stove....

Thank the Lord that is done... and that I stood my ground about not going to TI first... the pack of them were only coming through Raccoon as we were motoring thru back to RYC after our finish. Was very creepy that there were only about a dozen boats, maybe less, finishing when we did.

"The Three Bridge Fiasco is now complete. Rocket 88 was the first boat to finish, followed by Shadow, both fast catamarans. The race committee is hunkered down over the computer feeding in numbers and cross-checking them. When they are ready, the preliminary results will be posted at www.sfbaysss.org."

Well - that was challenging. Got stuck with everyone else at the Aquatic Park for a couple of hours...

A little more breeze - meaning some - towards Alacatraz, so parked there for awhile.

Tried the button hook around TI - gave up around 2 and went home. I "think" there was a hawkfarm on the backside of TI that had already been to red rock. Not sure though.

Wow, how bad was that. I got caught in the washing machine on the south side of Alcatraz for like a full hour. Could not get clear. When I tacked away the current reduced the wind strength just enough that when I tacked back the flow from the south bay shoved me right back up against the rock for more pictures from the tourist who must have thought there were a lot of crazy sailors out there. Could have may it one time except for the E27 that tacked out into me and hit me causing me to tack, AGAIN.

Pulled the plug at noon and was home by five.

From Tiger Beetle:
Our goal was to finish the race, and we just barely squeaked under the time limit (like by 2 minutes!). We went TI-RR-Blackaller, and based on the boats we met as we were going around TI (Motorcycle Irene, for example) it was clear we had not chosen well.

Start was fine, we played for the shore along San Francisco, almost sailed backwards into Aquatic Park, and crept along the breakwall towards Pier 39. The problem for us was the transition from a filling westerly at the Gate (when a fuzzy rain blob came through with 7 knots of wind) and the weak southerly coming in from the south bay - there was a space of several hundred yards of waffling breeze and while on the same heading we would be on port, then starboard, then running, then head to wind - baffling and annoying!

We go suckered into trying for a bit of breeze that took us out towards Alcatraz and into the ebb, and we went for a nice lazy slow circle drifting back towards the start line (the start was so much fun we through we'd do it again). Made it back to the shoreline, go through the transition into the 4-7 knot southerly and short tacked around Pier 39 and up to the Bay Bridge (it is now 2:30pm and we finally tacked to cross the ebb from San Francisco Bay Bridge anchorage over towards TI), and from there it was a straightforward sail to Red Rock.

We decided to hang in even though it looked like no shot at finishing, at least we could enjoy a nice spinnaker run after all that work to get around our first bridge. Had a delightful run under half ounce kite; we met another fuzzy rain blob at Richmond, wind built to 18-20 and it started raining, down with kite, up with no. 1 and we charged off to Red Rock, got around at 4:45PM (Bridge Two!) and we still had significant ebb. Up Raccoon Straits, met the flood briefly off Corinthian YC, went to Sausalito, wind backed off to 10 knots (unroll no. 1 to full size), and had a wierd wind shift at the Gate that headed us towards Blackaller. That race mark is hard to see at night, we found it - the black blob in the reflected glare of shoreside lights - and had 12 minutes to go the last 1.1 miles... and we made it!

Much fun, I think we're DFL in division, we made our goal and am most happy about it.

Our goal was to stay warm, not destroy a 10 year old #1, and not incur any stitches in skull of crew or skipper. Went to RR first. Had wind a lot of the time, a few short holes. Had current most of the time. Came across line with very few boats near. Nice downwind run back to RYC.

The Invisible Hand (talk to the Hand - listen to the FINGER!) had some 'new furler' teething issues. The jib would not fully unroll before or during the race. So after the start we decided we should try the new Code-0. Drifting into the middle of the bay the wind was shifting from West to South every few minutes. Lost track of how many times I rolled/unrolled the CZ but it had to be close to 10. Finally got moving toward Raccoon and got the kite up as we entered the straight. Cruised down to Red Rock.

After Red Rock we tacked to stay in the ebb toward Angel Island while everyone else faded off into the Berkely Circle. That paid huge. Tried to get east of TI but no wind so started to head west of TI but a while and more wind shifts later we were back east of TI.

After TI it was an easy ebb and SW wind ride up the city front to button-hook BA and back to the finish.

DeathSpear Brief report...

Thanks to the race committee for putting up with all those boats.

We felt pretty smart until we hit the Bay Bridge. We manage to squeeze past the fleet in Pier39, after a few short tacks along the city front had a successful cross over to TI and hugged the TI shore up to the beach where at the time we joined maybe half dozen boats trying to cross the current. It wasn't going to be... After about 40 minutes of trying we were up to probably 30 boats in a 1000 sq meter area staying in a whirpool in the corner of TI. Kudos to all the skippers... even after a bunch of boats anchored in the tight space everything worked pretty smoothly in managing all the boats. I saw a couple of short lived groundings and a couple of dragged anchors. It was a desperate time. Eventually the current let up a bit and boats started to make their way around the island. By that point it was clear we had lost the overalls as some boats were already approaching from the north. Still there was a bunch of good boats that had chosen this route so we had our own race within the race.

The wind picked up nicely just north of South Hampton and we got to turn on the afterburners for a while. Around RR we still had favorable current, but we found the start of the flood as we entered Racoon Straights. Then it was a long slog to Sausalito and the North Tower before venturing across to Blackaller.

Finished just before 6 in the dark. A long day. Ironically, I had one of the best sails home ever... a dark nice reach all the way down the estuary, the boat just slicing along.

About Tuesday I started thinking the figure 4 (RR-TI-Blackaller) made a lot of sense. I wanted to stay flexible, but I never got any incentive to change my mind. We took Red Rock to port which was probably a mistake; we had to jibe three times instead of once as we were getting too close to the keep-out zone, and it was a very slow rounding. As the fog filled in we zoomed down with good wind and current as far as Southampton, then it got light. Slow beating through the barges and new bridge. It looked like we'd be able to set the chute again after rounding Yerba Buena, but we got a big header and a big increase in wind strength at that point. We were overpowered with the #1 all the way to Blackaller, but didn't bother to change down. One short easy leg back to the finish and we were done about 5:05.

What's this I hear about the DDD division requiring just one woman? If so, we (Solar Wind) qualify. Jan was a real trooper, feeling pretty miserable on the tail end of a cold.
