Just back from prepping boat for additional incoming....Was there to watch two derelict boats,
one motor, one sail, get loaded on a large flatbed big rig.... Destination? Tracy land fill...

Latest NWS Special Weather Statement:

...PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS POSSIBLE STARTING FRIDAY AND CONTINUING THROUGH NEXT WEEK... A SERIES OF STRONG STORM SYSTEMS ARE FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS THE SAN FRANCISCO AND MONTEREY BAY REGION STARTING ON FRIDAY AND CONTINUING AT LEAST THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF NEXT WEEK. ALTHOUGH THERE IS STILL SOME UNCERTAINTY WITH THE DETAILS...

THERE IS INCREASING CONFIDENCE THAT PORTIONS OF OUR AREA WILL RECEIVE SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNTS OF RAINFALL. AT THIS TIME BETWEEN 1 AND 2 INCHES ARE EXPECTED FOR MANY URBAN LOCATIONS BY TUESDAY WITH OVER HALF A FOOT POSSIBLE FOR COASTAL MOUNTAIN RANGES.

IN ADDITION...SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL BEGIN TO INCREASE EARLY ON FRIDAY AND COULD GUST TO OVER 40 MPH BY FRIDAY NIGHT. PERSONS AROUND THE SAN FRANCISCO AND MONTEREY BAY AREA SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR THESE STORMS. DUE TO THE LIKELIHOOD FOR LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS...POWER OUTAGES ARE POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION...LOCAL URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOODING CAN BE EXPECTED. ANYONE PLANNING ON TRAVELING TO A HIGHER ELEVATION SPOT SUCH AS LAKE TAHOE MAY ENCOUNTER VERY HEAVY SNOW WHICH COULD MAKE TRAVEL DIFFICULT.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
249 PM PST THU DEC 16 2010

...PERIODS OF RAIN...POSSIBLY MODERATE TO HEAVY AT TIMES...WITH
GUSTY WINDS STARTING FRIDAY AND CONTINUING THROUGH NEXT WEEK...

.DISCUSSION...AS OF 2:49 PM PST THURSDAY...TODAY HAS BEEN PRETTY
MILD ACROSS THE DISTRICT WITH AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES IN THE 50S.
CLOUDS WILL BEGIN INCREASING FROM THE WEST LATER TODAY AS THE PATTERN
CHANGES TO A WET ONE FOR THE STATE AS A VERY MOIST ZONAL FLOW TAKES
AIM AT CALIFORNIA. THE FIRST IMPULSE PROGGED TO AFFECT THE AREA WILL
APPROACH ON FRIDAY RESULTING IN A RAMP-UP OF SOUTHERLY WINDS DURING
THE DAY WITH RAIN SPREADING ACROSS THE AREA. THE 12Z NAM BRINGS THE
STRONGEST 925 MB WINDS TO THE COAST AND HIGHER TERRAIN BY MIDNIGHT
SATURDAY MORNING WITH 50 KNOTS POSSIBLE AT THE COAST...MAINLY ALONG
THE SAN MATEO THROUGH MARIN COUNTY AREAS. ANOTHER IMPULSE SLATED FOR
SUNDAY NIGHT IS FORECAST TO BRING GUSTY SOUTHWEST WINDS TO MAINLY
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY SOUTH...WITH WINDS TO 40 KNOTS AT 925 MB.

THE PERIODS OF HEAVIER RAIN WILL COINCIDE WITH THESE WINDS WITH
FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY NIGHTS SEEING THE BULK OF THE RAINFALL...
ALTHOUGH LATEST MODELS KEEP A TAP OF HEAVY RAIN AIMED AT THE BIG
SUR COAST AND THEN SOUTH OF THERE FOR SUNDAY. RAINFALL ESTIMATES
THROUGH THE WEEKEND REMAIN ABOUT THE SAME WITH 1-2 INCHES IN THE
URBAN AREAS AND UP TO 4-6 INCHES IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN...WITH THE
HIGHER AMOUNTS PROGGED FOR THE BIG SUR COAST.

THERE CONTINUES TO BE CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY CONCERNING NEXT WEEK
AND THE POTENTIAL FOR ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAINS. DIFFERENCES IN MODEL
OUTPUT FORECASTS AS WELL AS RUN-TO-RUN INCONSISTENCIES CONTINUE TO
LOWER CONFIDENCE CONCERNING NEXT WEEK`S WEATHER. HOWEVER...THE LATEST
RUNS OF THE GFS AND ECMWF INDICATE TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY BEING
POTENTIALLY THE MOST PROBLEMATIC AS BOTH AIM THE MOISTURE TAP AT THE
CENTRAL COAST...OR SOUTH INTO LA`S REGION. THE 12Z GFS ALSO INDICATES
POSSIBLY VERY STRONG WINDS ON WEDNESDAY...AT LEAST ALOFT...SO THIS
BEARS WATCHING AS WELL.

&&

.MARINE...AS OF 4:15 AM PST THURSDAY...NORTHERLY WINDS WILL BECOME
MORE SOUTHERLY AS A STORM SYSTEM APPROACHES LATER TONIGHT AND EARLY
FRIDAY. INITIALLY...WINDS WILL BE 15 TO 25 KT...BUT WINDS WILL
LIKELY INCREASE 20 TO 30 KT. DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A SLAM DUNK FOR
GALE WARNING CONDITIONS. A FEW GALE FORCE GUSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE
FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT. FOR NOW HAVE OPTED TO ISSUE HIGH END
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY.

Hummmm sounds like the perfect weekend to teach my kids the joys of gutter boating!! Lets see I’ll need some milk cartons to cut in half and some mast and sail material……………any other designs I should be thinking of??

A couple water bottles lashed or hot melt glued with popsicle sticks makes a good start on a cat.

Get 3 water bottles, 2 small and one large and make a tri. You could even recreate AC-33.

Just have the kids argue all the time while you are putting the boats together!

Ahhhh, Gutter boating! YES!

One key ingredient are the boots. You really have to have big rubber boots that are designed to splash parents. The parents need to run in mock terror of getting wet as designated kid stops in puddles and gutters.

It is storms like this when a kid learns the important lesson: "Sailors Don't Melt". My kids, in their 20s, still say it. It's the right attitude for life.

BBQ just blew across the deck and make a hell of a noise. Those darn Webber BBQ lids, they develop a LOT of lift!!

I'm guessing we've got a steady 28 with gusts to 35+, maybe 40 here in Santa Cruz. The boats in the yacht harbor are bouncing around a bit, good night for mooring line testing.

Can't wait for dawn, I really want to get out on the coast to the N and see what the sea state is - should be good fun wave-watching.

River flows are all up. Folsom Dam is putting out 30K cfs. We got 3" since the rain started here.
One small tree down from saturation.
