View Full Version : ESPN acquires rights to 31st St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

Miami, FL Mar. 04, 2011 ESPN has acquired multi-platform and broadcast media rights to the 31st St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, the world class racing event in the Caribbean taking place March 1-6, it was announced by Bernard Stewart, Vice president and General Manager, ESPN Caribbean and Maritime Media, and Heather Tackling, Regatta Director

ESPN will present a half-hour special in early April featuring the races and entertainment events that have earned the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta its slogan: "Serious Fun." The 2011 St.Maarten Heineken Regatta race is expected to attract more than 200 boats with crews of 2,500 from 30 different nations. From maxi yachts to beach cats to bareboat charters, this famous Caribbean event features top notch racing competitors sailing for the title of winner of the GILL Commodores Cup, the Budget Marine Match Racing Cup and the three-day Race Around the Island.

"This event demonstrates the close working relationship ESPN has with our local affiliates", said Stewart. "Our involvement in this event comes through an association for over 10 years with St Maarten Cable TV. Beulah Jonis, Cable TV's Managing Director, helped tremendously in our understanding the importance to the local business community of showcasing the excellent sailing competition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and beautiful wonders of St Maarten to ESPN's regional and international audience".

Regatta Director Tackling stated, "This event has grown significantly over the years and to have this affiliation with ESPN is just fantastic. We are always working on ways to bring the event to the world and this collaboration will allow the island and the event to be visible to the ESPN viewers. We are thrilled to be working together".

The ESPN program special on the 31st St. Maarten Heineken Regatta will be broadcasted throughout the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, North, Central and South America, Australia/Oceania, Africa, the Middle East and Israel.

The half-hour program will feature championship sailing by world class sailors that include Volvo Ocean Race veteran Mikey Joubert, American multihull legend Cam Lewis, and five-time round-the-world racer Bouwe Bekking. It will also highlight the performance by Grammy Award winner Wyclef Jean, who is slated as the headline entertainer at this year's Regatta in a free performance on St. Maarten's Kim Sha beach. There is a star-studded line up of over 39 international and local entertainers, bands and DJs from around the world scheduled to perform throughout the race week.
