ALAMEDA, Calif., March 23 (UPI) -- A Coast Guard pilot was sentenced Wednesday to three months in a military brig for a boat collision in San Diego Bay that killed an 8-year-old boy.

Petty Officer Paul Ramos, 22, was convicted Tuesday in a court-martial at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, Calif., of dereliction of duty. He also was reduced in rank and forfeited $1,300 in pay, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The jury cleared Ramos of negligent homicide and involuntary manslaughter. The victim's family was outraged and has a civil case pending against the government.

Ramos was driving a Coast Guard vessel Dec. 20, 2009, when it crashed into a stationary pleasure craft off Harbor Island. Anthony DeWeese, 8, was killed.

Ramos' speed was estimated at 15 to 30 knots. It was a dark night and the bay was filled with boats festooned in holiday lights.

Three other crew members aboard the patrol boat were charged.

A dereliction-of-duty charge against Machinery Technician 3rd Class Lavelle Teague was dismissed for lack of evidence. In January, Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Brittany Rasmussen admitted dereliction of duty and was reprimanded.

The highest-ranking crewman, Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Ian Howell, is awaiting trial.

3 months for a human life and $1,300.00 fine. Now what if it were a civilian that killed a military brat?
What are we talking? 30 years to life?

Is there more to this than:
"Ramos was driving a Coast Guard vessel Dec. 20, 2009, when it crashed into a stationary pleasure craft off Harbor Island. Anthony DeWeese, 8, was killed.
Ramos' speed was estimated at 15 to 30 knots. It was a dark night and the bay was filled with boats festooned in holiday lights."

If so, "Dereliction of Duty", doesn't seem appropriate. If I don't slow down and move over a lane when there is a parked cop car by the side of the road it's big bucks. Hit a stationary cop car and kill him and it's game over.....for me.
