KFOG KaBoom
Saturday, May 22, 2010

KFOG KaBoom is heading down the road a few miles to its new home at Candlestick Point, a site that's hosted many good times in years past, from MLB All-Star Games and World Series to NFC Championship Games and even the final live concert by The Beatles.

We'll contninue in that tradition, with Foghead favorites Melissa Etheridge and John Butler Trio rocking the KaBoom Stage, followed by the true star of the show - the KFOG KaBoom fireworks - synchronized to a World Class Rock soundtrack. We've also added a few new attractions to the show, including expanded children's entertainment, local music and wine tasting hosted by Wente Vineyards and more.
Tickets go on sale to the public at 10am Monday, April 5, at Ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster outlets. Advance tickets will be just $15, plus nominal fees, going up to $20 day of show. New this year - ages 2 and under are free!
Stay tuned to KFOG and check here for frequent updates, including detailed transit and parking information, coming soon.

So what's it like from the water? Can you hear the music? Do you have to worry about falling cinder setting your boat on fire?

Candlestick is a big unkown, but guest slips at Oyster Point and Sierra Point will sell out fast. Tides look favorable for setting a hook, flooding all afternoon.
Dress like nanook and you'll be all right.

Candlestick = too far from Alameda for an open boat ride without an insulated space suit. Why the move? Where will it be next year? Barrow Alaska?

Took a tad closer look at the cove immediately to the east of Candlestick Point this past weekend.
Logic says it would be the most protected area from wind in the prevailing westerlys... In the afternoon when the tide was high, was able to sneak in and get a closer look... with just a mild 15-20 knot breeze, one would essentially have to get right up close to the shore before feeling any noticable wind relief, although water was really flat further out. Water there registers at 3.0-3.5 feet a MLLW.

To get into a more secure 5.0-6.0 MLLW area, yer pretty much gonna be in the maelstrom...unless the weathewr god give us a pleasant offshore present...The knolls in Brisbane are looking mighty sweet....

Hey, I resemble that remark. I committed to a few friends to go, so only have room for about a dozen more. I appreciate the intel about the cove, protection, and all. I draw 18" all boards up, so I 3' MLWL sounds fine.

L-38 tells ya where to go, sort of. Watch out for Johnny Law. Pack plenty of lifejackets, make sure your flares are current, lights in working order etc.
NWS is forecasting 15-25 Knot breezes. Dress warm.

KFOG's annual thank you to listeners (or as afternoon Personality Big Rick Stuart says "The DJ's Christmas Bonus") went off with a bang last night at its new location of Candlestick Point. Originally held at Justin Herman Plaza under the Sky Concert banner until a legal hassle made the station change the name to the now well known KABOOM. After outgrowin the original location, it was moved south to peir 30-32 for a number of years.

Its proximity to the wat has drawn mariners of all sorts over the year, turning out en mass to anchor in the adjoining waters for a pleasant picnic and listen to the the free music from " World Class" artists the event draws every year. This years entertainment headliners consisted of the hard rockin Melissa Etheridge and the John Butler Trio.

The weather was blustery and cold, much colder than usual for May, with report of snow flurries on the local moutains. The new location at Candlestick Point, a known wind funnel, did not deter the hardy fans on shore or the water. As dusk fell and estimated 70 or so sailboats and another 70 plus motor vessel had braved the conditions and made their way to Punta Candlestick to enjoy the free pyrotechnics show, which some have called the best in Northern California!
