KTVU meteorologist Bill Martin at home, where he has been perfecting his beer-brewing techniques. Martin , a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, is the longest-tenured chief meteorologist in the San Francisco Bay Area. More about him here: http://www.ktvu.com/station/1849431/detail.html.

I've always enjoyed Bill Martin's work. The KTVU chief meteorologist seems honestly enthusiastic about the weather. My friend Rob, who works at Wise Surfboards near Ocean Beach, has told me for years that he's a legit surfer. And my secret KTVU insider/The Poop loyalist confirmed that in person he is indeed "the best." With that, I contacted Bill and asked if he would sit down for an interview.

It was not disappointing.

There's a profile of Bill in today's Chronicle, talking about his first job as a weatherman in Santa Rosa (in the beginning he lived out of his van), his first surfboard (bought for $30 from a dishwasher at Charlie Brown's steak house in Emeryville) and his theory behind his continued success ("They say, 'He's not that super-duper articulate,' or 'He's not that super-duper handsome. ... But you know what, this son-of-a-bitch cares.")

The article is currently embargoed from the Web, so you'll have to buy a newspaper. I'll link to it when it becomes available online -- probably first thing on Thursday morning.

In the meantime, please enjoy this bonus video, where I interview Bill about his beer brewing interests. He grows hops in a planter in the back yard and brews in 10-gallon batches in his garage. And he doesn't give the good stuff to just anybody ...

Bill's candor was exceptional, and I hope I didn't punish him with this extremely amateur video and my slightly less amateur Chronicle article. I'm also disappointed that I had trouble downloading the part where he poured me a glass of beer. It was @#$%ing fantastic -- like drinking a loaf of fresh-baked bread.

And one last thing. Those are HOPS in the baggies in the freezer. Don't even go there, people ...
