It’s that time of year again for the annual Memorial Day sprint down to Monterey. Race down Friday and with any luck get to the MYC before the bar closes. The question after that is do you hang out for the awards Sat night then sail up to HMB on Sunday enjoy a nice dinner and make the way the rest way home on Monday making a nice long weekend out of it …………………Or………. finish the race then drink until you are falling down get up Sat morning and have a Chorizo Burrito from the lil hole in the wall place right by the club then find a way to get home ASAP and still have a 3 day weekend to enjoy………… I know what my plan is how about you?? Either way this is a Fun one and I think of it as a tribute to Don & Betty’s tenure running the OYRA.

So who is in?

Anyone look at the forecast yet?

Just eat the left over chili at the YC Saturday morning, that will clean out your innards pronto!

RAGTIME! is in - we'll have four on the boat. Then Connie and the two younger kids are coming down Saturday afternoon and we'll go for a daysail on Sunday. Rich and I are DH'ing back up the coast, leaving Monday morning. So we're making a long weekend of it.

We love Monterey but I haven't done this race before.

That forcast dosn't look like we are in for a record setting year but if all the dots conect together it could still be a good run!

It's a little premature to assume that forecast is set in stone, however it is better than 15-25 out of the south with fog.

It was a great race the highlight was the run across monterey bay. around Davenport we were about 10mi out with the SC37 they were about 100 meters ahead we through a quick Jibe in and I think they stayed out and shortly after that the wind started to pick up and we peeled to the A4 right around sun set after that we were off to the races!!! sweet run across the bay with TWS around 20-25 and BS 12-15 to a high of 18. Finished around 21:45 first to finish in Div. Squeeked out a corrected 1st by 40 something seconds on the E37. 4th over all, 1st was the Ultimate 24. Got to see and drink with alot of old friends and may have made some new ones!! I was home playing with the kids by 13:30. A FANTASTIC way to start a 3 day weekend.

Please set some time aside this weekend to rememeber those that gave all!!

Invisible Hand finished at approximately 9:45
1st in Division, 3rd overall...

We got bumped out of 3rd by the Ultimate 24. It now turns out the U-24 was scored with its general handicap, not its down wind rating like everybody else. About 30 secs/mile difference, will push them back 40+ minutes. So, the Hand may still regain its 3rd overall position. Great sailing, fast race.

It was a great weekend, though some of us got our heads handed to
us on the return trip trying to get around Santa Cruz.

I usually do a writeup anyway; here's what I had going.

We had a fairly conventional shorthanded start: everyone basically at the
line but not maneuvering hard for position. Elise came out with very good
speed near the committee boat end and just went straight for the bridge as
most of the previous classes had. The wind was up and down between very
light and just heavy enough to make me wonder whether the #3 would be
necessary.

My sail choice at the start (#1) gave me an advantage out to the gate,
then a significant disadvantage until I was able to crack off at Seal
Rock, and an advantage again after that. In retrospect, I probably should
have done a change #1->#3 at the bridge and #3->Blast Reacher at Seal
Rock.

I stayed pretty close to shore the whole trip. There was some great
current between Mile Rock and shore, so I passed right next to it and then
headed right around the corner and south. With the wind forecast to be
swinging right, I wasn't as worried about a hole at Montara as usual and
just chose a course to get max vmg. At Montara, I was able to set the
kite, which didn't come down until after the finish. There was always
enough breeze to keep me moving but not so much as to wear me out keeping
up with trim. The gusts were pretty tame and didn't vary too much in
direction.

By Pigeon Point, the wind was taking me right into shore so I took a short
gybe out and back (taking me not more than two or three miles offshore).

The wind built a bit near Davenport and carried me straight to the finish.
There were a couple of gybes, made more challenging by my bungee cord
autopilot (Elise's normal autopilot was totally dead). The wind was about
15 gusting a little more at times and a friendly following sea made the
boathandling very easy.

The wind held all the way to the finish line, and it was a very pleasant
change to carry the kite across the line in solid breeze.

Having lost track of the competition back around Pillar Point (suspecting
that they'd gone hard offshore), I had no idea of how well the race was
going. Once past Santa Cruz and in the bay, I could start hearing
check ins on the handheld VHF and that was encouraging.

I thought that David Nabors on Temerity had been pretty close to my course
and that Galaxsea was offshore, but had completely lost sight of S'Moore
not too long after clearing Mile Rock.

The real wakeup call was when I crossed the line a minute ahead of DH J35
Brainwaves and then saw Great White finish while I was cleaning up sails
and waiting for a slip.

A local Express 27 and 37 racer (Belle Icenhower) who had been on
Locomotion then graciously carted me and some of the War Pony+Serena folks
over to her house and served us burritos before we all just collapsed on
various couches and floor space. Long day!

Wow, can't believe no one caught that in Monterey before the awards, ESPECIALLY the winning boat and others in their division.

R/C work was generally sucky and cost us huge at the start. We were on the line at the gun and 4-5 boats were ahead of us (OCS). Only one got called back. Down in Monterey the R/C said they couldn't see the sail numbers - WTF? Ironically the boat that screwed us worst was the Cal 40 and it was starting with the wrong division. The skipper was . . . wait for it . . . the R/C chair.

After all that we had a generally good race and great ride down and across Monterey Bay. Skip is an amazing driver when you're on the ragged edge of disaster. I spun the boat out twice - Skip only once (I think). We sailed the boat much better than the results (with DW ratings) indicate. Full power all the way and touched nearly 19 knots on two big surfs. Way fun.

Oh, and the Mr. Hands crew was quite chatty at the MPYC - I think they'd been there awhile!
