ORACLE Racing, Team USA for the 34th America’s Cup, hosted fanatic guest Tom Watson, a.k.a. Mr. Pink Boat, for today’s training session on the Bay.

Watson, who lives aboard his sailboat in Sausalito, showed his enthusiasm for the home team when he camped out last month for 30 hours in front of the HiDive bar on the Embarcadero. He was determined to win the challenge from ORACLE Racing CEO Russell Coutts, who offered a ride on one of the team’s AC45’s to the first person he met at the HiDive. That led to Watson sleeping on the sidewalk in front of the bar to win the contest.

“That was a funny night. I met a few interesting people,” said Watson. “One guy stopped by around 3 a.m. and asked me what I was doing, so we had a chat.”

Watson earned his nickname “Mr. Pink Boat” because of his commitment to evolve breast cancer research through sailing. Pink is the chosen color of the National Breast Cancer Foundation and is often seen in October, which is national breast cancer awareness month.

Later this year Watson plans to compete in the singlehanded Transpac Race, from San Francisco to Hawaii, and in Oct. 2013, about one week after the scheduled conclusion of the America’s Cup, he is scheduled to take off on a circumnavigation aboard his 28-foot Pearson Triton Darwind, which is painted in pink, in an attempt to raise $1 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Watson got a tour of the base at Pier 80 before heading on the water for a 40-minute sail. Although the winds were light, no more than 5 or 6 knots, Watson was smiling from ear to ear.

“That was an awesome experience. I think we hit 20 knots,” he said. “I wish I could go that fast around the world. ORACLE Racing is my Team USA!”
