San Francisco officials preparing a bid to host the next America’s Cup have begun lobbying businesses to get behind the effort with sponsorships.

In recent weeks, city economic development leaders have met with major Bay Area companies including Visa Inc., Wells Fargo & Co., URS Corp., PG&E Corp., Google Inc., Electronic Arts Inc. and Zynga Game Network Inc. to gauge their interest in spending money on the event.

The organizers are inviting many more businesses to a meeting Aug. 30 at the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce to further discuss sponsorships.

While the early effort is on Bay Area-based companies, the outreach will go nationwide, said Kyri McClellan, a project manager overseeing the effort for the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development.
