View Full Version : Melges 32 Worlds Thread and Contest

PD Staff

Now that the Big Boat Series has ended and the sore and tired return to their regular jobs to rest,
(except those participating in both BBS and M-32 Worlds) Its time focus on the final major International Regatta of the year, The much anticipated Melges 32 Worlds.

We had a good preview of what to expect to a certain extent. Most of the top players hovered around the surface in tight action, even though most of the time on Thursday and Friday you could not see them. A major surprise occurred in Sunday's finale, when Jeff Ecklund's Star pulled out of the race when it became evident that there was no catching B-Lin. According to our un-named sources, there are 8-10 teams which have the potential to win the worlds this year, and naming them might provide an unfair advantage to Pick to Win contestants, so we will leave it to your to do your own D&D.

The racing starts in earnest Wednesday with 2 races scheduled daily on the Berkeley Circle. Wx for the week looks much better than this past week, with an actual warming trend on tap for the week.

The tight course events on the "Circle of Pain" should lead to very exciting conditions for all the competitors with a premium on boat speed, as these go fast machine eat up the down hill legs in
a big hurry, any errors will be greatly magnified.

You can see the entire crew lists by clicking Complete Crew List (http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_documents/375/2010-M32-Race-Ready.pdf) and the entry list Here (http://www.yachtscoring.com/current_event_entries.cfm?eID=375)

How the contest will work:

Pick your top 3 Teams in order of your predicted finish

Select a throwout number of the 3 teams combined worst finishes.

( ie throwouts of 15, 12, 8 = 35)

Scores will be cumulative, through out the event. Highest points scored wins

Players will be awarded points thusly:

3 points for each 1st place, 2 points for each 2nd and 1 for each
3rd that their selections score during event.

1st tie breaker: Correct order of finishers (Final Results)

2nd tie breaker most bullets combined by your 3 teams

3rd tie breaker guess closest tie beaker matching actual throwout combined scores

4th tie breaker -Dartboard

You can sign up any time, however scores for races already started will be subtracted from your final
score.

Winners recieve:

1st Place: a $100.00 Gift Certificate to Point Loma Outfitting (http://www.pointlomaoutfitting.com/)

2nd Place: A custom dry shirt courtesy of Dry Shirt (http://www.dryshirt.com/merchant5/merchant.mvc) with artwork of you choice from H2oshots.com (http://www.h2oshots.com/)

3rd Place: A Pressure Drop Tee Shirt

Good luck and have fun!

Well it was a lot of fun. Don't feel bad even the San Jose Sharks that were there got kicked out when the band started (dang they were cute)....My head's a little too large for my skull today and I went home early...definitely a top notch affair.

Here's a little tidbit for you i learned monday night from the regatta chair....any coach boat that gets in the way of the race may end up getting its race boat tossed....Apparently Elvis came close to this during BBS....Wonder what they will do to the international media??? Howitzer? And yes for those viewing at home....EVERY raceboat has a protector on course.

It's in the SI's. Coach boats are required to stay at least 300' away from their boats and clear of everyone else as well.

most of the top-8 boats were not popular votes in the contest. I guess a throwout will change things a lot though, Throttle with a 3-23...Star... It will be fun to watch. The cream always rises to the top and the popular votes will likely be the players but there are some surprises after day 1 !

Weird protests. Why in the hell would you bother protesting a boat that is sitting second from DFL? Wouldn't you rather be having a beer?

edit: and I really do suck at picking winners at anything. There's a perfectly good reason why I don't gamble.

Another day in the books, and one for the books.
Despite the forecast for offshore winds, the Berkeley Circle received a building westerly during the early afternoon and the 1st start of day Race 7 was under way in 7-10 knots.

Despite a cold gloomy for most of the year, Autumns arrival has brought wit it classic San Francisco weather with warm temps and brilliant sunshine, perfect football weather.

With the Campanile Tower of the UC Berkeley Campus standing stoutly in the distance the crew mixed it up on the water yet again, mixing up the standings even further, akin to a proper rugby scrum. It was day for the have nots to bring it, and prove they can dance with the stars...

In race 7 Team Barbarians from the UK shook off the previous week disappointment and found a reason to believe, and elevated their game to new highs, pulling off a mighty 2nd just behind Jeff Ecklunds Star. Just behind was Rod Jabins Ramrod, pulling out a personal best with a third, right ahead of Full Throttle and Martin Knetig's Black Mamba yet another surprise in the top 5.

Ramrod, however was not finished. They took ownership of race 8 and never looked back. With winds
now nearing 20 knots, Ramrod lead from start to finish, teasing the likes of Full Throttle, Argo and B-lin sailing around every mark. And yest another surprise, Yasha Samurai of Japan shook off the cobwebs and pulled a 5 spot out of the hat.

Tomorrows finale should be epic with B-lin< Full Throttle, Rouarou, Star, Warpath, Goombay Smash and Red all potentially in reach, but as this event has shown, don't be surprised if there are additional surprises!

The question came up with the commentators about Goombay Smash's sails. They're 3DI from what it appears.

All else look to be 3DL.

Melges 32 World Championship - Congratulations to 26-year old Luca Lalli on B-Lin Sailing as he has clinched the 2010 Melges 32 World Championship title, two points ahead of his strongest adversary John Porter on Full Throttle.

http://pressure-drop.us/imagehost/images/29929088771425929070.jpg

Aboard Lalli's Melges 32 was tactician Lorenzo Bressani, Flavio Favini, Federico Michetti, Carlo Zermini, Luca Faravelli, Lorenzo Del Rio and Stefano Nicolussi. Jeff Ecklund on STAR had a phenomenal week pulling up to secure third overall.

http://pressure-drop.us/imagehost/images/01767463762596119921.jpg

With two additional races on PRO John Craig's agenda, ultra light conditions greeted the fleet as they made their way out to Berkeley Circle for the final showdown between top seated Lalli, Porter and Andy Lovell on Rougarou. With a mere 6 knots of breeze, the fleet went racing with Don Jesberg on Viva rounding the top mark in first, followed by Yukihiro Ishida's Yasha Samurai, then Alex Jackson's Leenabarca in third.

The three raced downwind with Jesberg holding on for first with Lovell coming in from the right to slide in for second. Back upwind Lovell stretched his lead with Ishida overtaking Jesberg. Lovell took the win, Ishida was second. Porter, although rounding the first mark about mid-fleet, recovered well to challenge Jesberg for the third position at the finish. Jesberg had a little more momentum, just barely making the line to take third. Porter settled for fourth. Ecklund was fifth.

At this stage of the day, Porter had the title in hand with a one-point advantage over Lalli. As the race committee scrambled to fire off the second race of the day, prior to the 2:30 p.m. cut-off, teams were just as anxious to get in one more heat. The breeze was still light and fickle, lots of sunshine and flat seas prevailed as they went into almost immediate sequence once the line was set, Z-flag in effect. As the fleet approached the line, the first start resulted in a general recall with a Z-flag penalty applied to Porter and Kip Meadows on roXanne.

Jackson, on the other hand shot off the line making a lane for the top spot around the mark, followed by Steve Howe on Warpath and Pieter Taselaar's Bliksem rounding third, Lalli in fourth. Firmly in the lead, Jackson took the win with Howe maintaining a second. Lalli finished third, sealing the deal for the championship win and title a substantial 11 points ahead of second overall Porter.
