  • The New Mantra: Slow Is Fun!

In the 1970's Bill Lee of Santa Cruz coined the phrase "Fast Is Fun" which be the modus operandi of the SC ultralight movement. Fast forward a few decades and another Santa Cruz resident, Philippe Kahn is modifying the term, as well a veteran sled to createa slower, yet more surfable platform to surf to Hawaii, not just reach.

The former Alan Andrews 70 turbo sled ex-Magintude and Equation) has just emerged from Dencho Marine in Southern California where she was created in 1997 after modifications to reduce the weight, stability, drag and sail area so it would perform better in Transpac (both elapsed and corrected time). Dubbed the" Waikiki 70", by Philippe in what he has described "What we hope will be a class of great boats focused on surfing DOWN the waves as opposed to reaching fast across them. Waikiki is about fun and surfing."

Most of the modified boats now have lighter displacement, deeper draft, more stability and increased sail area relative to the original SC 70 – the amounts vary from boat to boat, while a few boats (like Mirage) remain close to their original configuration. Of course, the ORR ratings change (get faster) in response to these speed-enhancing modifications, so there exists a wide spread in time allowances across today’s ULDB70 fleet – there has not been any consensus ‘new rule’ developed outside of the GL70 class in the Great Lakes.

The idea would be to create a fleet of pre-1999 boats to sail under the Transpac Rule, The mast was chopped, the fin lightened and reduced on order to have fair racing with the other 70's in a non turbo-ed platform. Her 1st sail was in last weeks Spinnaker Cup, a down hill race from SF to Monterey, which Pegasus inexplicably , was the only DNF. Her next test is the Coastal Cup, which runs from SF to Santa Catalina before the Transpac in July where she will sail against Holua under the TP rule. We wish her luck and would love to see a fleet of 70's back on the West Coast!
