Round the County, All in a Northerly
    by Kurt Hoehne www.sailish.com

For many of us, Round the County (RTC) race in the San Juans is the best of times and the worst of times, with one day having breeze and the next, none. Or, doing well one day and not the next. [Note: One of the Moore 24's Class rules loosely instructs that the winner of said regatta is honored by receiving the task of writing the report

who works the keyboard as easy or easier than a wet tiller or a cold Rainier. Enjoy]

    Kraken Log - Day 9

0405 HST; the sun is just coming up on the Eastern horizon and the darkness is slowly being taken over by the light. At first it's black, then dark gray, then lighter gray then lighter gray again, until it's finally light.

One of the things that is interesting about off-shore sailing is that you are out all night every night. In our terrestrial lives most of us normally sleep through the night. We only see the start and the finish. Ask yourselves; how many entire nights have you actually seen in your entire lifetime? How many sun rises? How many times have you seen the moon rise AND set?

Sailing into the night always brings on a certain feeling of anxiety while sailing out of it brings relief. I guess it has to do with the fact ...

Day Two of the R2AK offered the same kind of dull excitement as the first. Teams were still dealing with the fat man of a high-pressure system that was squashing the Strait of Georgia under its sweaty mass. Teams sailed, stalled, rowed, pedaled, advanced, and retreated on the tides. Most faired well enough, but at least one team spent four hours ...
