The crew on Oracle Racing's "Redbull"branded AC 45 were enjoying fantastic conditions on San Francisco Bay this afternoon, brilliant warm conditions withe 20-25 knots on the central bay. This is the last practice before Newport's edition of the AC World Series and the crews were making the most of the conditions.

But back at the future home of the Americas Cup Village at Pier 27-29 things were less than rosy. A blaze broke out in the bulkhead of Pier 29 at 1:50 PM and burned for several hours, forcing a 4 alarm response which closed down the embarcadero and snarled traffic. The shed behind the bulkhead and the adjoining work going on at Pier 27 was not effected.

At this time the source of the fire is still under investigation, but being that there is ongoing construction going on with lot of welding, the mystery may be solved soon.

It it unclear if the crews out practicing had any clue of what was burning onshore, and there's little a cat, no matter how fast can do in the fire fighting department...

Plus cat fur smells awful when singed...

    From the ACEA:

    POSTED ON 20 JUNE 2012

We applaud the immediate and courageous response from the San Francisco fire department this afternoon at Pier 29.

Pier 29 is not currently under the control of, or under development by, the America’s Cup. Pier 29 is still under the control of the city and Port of San Francisco and their contractor Turner Construction Company.

According to the reports we've heard, there are no injuries reported at pier and that is very good news.

Based on information available at this time, we do not anticipate that this will have any impact on our plans for the site and we look forward to moving ahead with the future construction of the America's Cup Village at Pier 27/29.
