• Tragedy Hits Lendy Cowes Week




    A sailor has sadly died in a freak accident whilst sailing in a major racing off Cowes this morning we can reveal.
    The man in his 40’s is understood to have become trapped in a sheet sail and dragged into the water.
    A passing sailor spotted the man who was in difficulty and dived into the water in an attempt to free the man who was trapped. The crew from the Cowes RNLI Lifeboat are understood to have carried out CPR on the man.
    A major lifesaving operation also took place off Trinity landing point in Cowes on the Isle of Wight to try and save the seriously ill sailor involving two helicopters and a coastguard team.

    Sadly the man is understood to have died at St Mary’s Hospital despite efforts of the lifeboat and emergency services.
    The sailor a man in 40’s is understood to have fell whilst the vessel was gybing during a race near to Osbourne bay.

    Lendy Cowes said : The team at Lendy Cowes Week are extremely sad to confirm the death of one of our competitors while racing here today (Friday 10th August).

    The casualty was quickly transferred to shore by an event safety boat. Medical assistance was waiting on shore and the casualty was then taken by ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, where he was pronounced dead. Next of kin have been informed.

    The team at Lendy Cowes Week are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. The Marine accident investigation department has confirmed that they have launched an investigation into the freak accident.
