    In late August 2012, a grainy photo of a boat emerged online.

    Most hardened America’s Cup followers will clearly remember the image that was the talk of the sailing world for many weeks. A high angle shot, looking down on a giant 72 foot red and black Emirates Team New Zealand catamaran seemingly flying above the waters of the Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour.

    Debate raged:
    “OMG photoshopped of course,”

    “Can't be foiling - anyone can see from that picture they're simply launched off a wave.” ...

    When the new class to be used for the 36th America’s Cup was announced last November, it caused quite a stir. With Emirates Team New Zealand having promised Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa Prada a return to monohulls, everyone knew that the foiling catamaran era would come to a close. What most did not expect, however, was quite such a radical design. The concept of the keel-less, foiling, soft wing-sailed, 75 foot monohull is unlike any other boat in the world and was radical enough that it has caused genuine debate as to whether such a craft would actually be able to sail at all.

    New York, N.Y. - New York Yacht Club American Magic, the U.S. sailing team
    challenging for the 36th America’s Cup has announced an initial roster of 17 sailors who
    will train and compete with the team. The accomplished group includes nine Americans
    and sailors from four other nations. The 36th America’s Cup will take place in March
    2021 off Auckland, New Zealand.
