    +++ SINKING YACHT +++

    A Mayday call just after midday led to the rescue of three Swiss sailors today.

    Their 40 foot yacht hit a navigational buoy at the entrance to Cowes harbour. The collision tore the rudder off and the yacht started to fill with water.

    A close by crew transfer workboat took two yacht crew off and Red Funnel ferries Red Osprey and Red Kestrel stood by.

    Cowes Lifeboat was launched. A Ministry of Defence Police launch arrived and later RNLI Calshot Lifeboat was launched and stood by with Cowes.

    Cowes lifeboat put crew and pump on the yacht to assist its skipper. When it became obvious the pump could not cope our helm retrieved both the skipper and our crew member for their safety.

    The MoD launch then brought the yacht skipper ashore to join his crew mates who were now safely at the Lifeboat Station.

    @Cowes Harbour launch now towed the yacht to shallow water where it finally sank in Gurnard Bay.

    Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team received the casualty crew from us and commenced co ordinating the incident from now on.

    All afloat units were stood down and Cowes Lifeboat returned at 2:15.
