The course comprised a weather mark off Capri, a leeward gate directly off the Sorrento Peninsula, before returning to a finish off Capri's Marina Grande. It's just over week away, the 3rd running of the California Offshore Race Week, with the start of the
1st leg, the Spinnaker Cup, an 88 nm sprint from San Francisco to Monterey departing May 26. Then boats
will embark on Monday May 28th for the 204nm gear busting Big Sur Tour aka Coastal Cup that takes the fleet
to Santa Barbara YC where they will relax for a short stay before gearing up for 245nm SoCal 300 which will lead them
through the Channel Islands and down to San Diego, beginning on Thursday May 31.

Being that the CORW is comprised of 3 offshore legs with an evening beer can tossed in at SBYC, the majority of the entrants will
participate in just one or two of the legs. See entry list HERE! But there are
10 boats this year that have signed up for all 3 legs:

We managed to get ahold of a few of the owners to get some perspective on their programs, their thoughts on the week,(that last 8 days) and
how they will manage the event. We start with Paul McDowell and the new to West Coast program of Mills 68 Prospector, :

Velvet Hammer Blastin down the Golden Gate Strait

It's not often that the weather wonks get it so wrong, but the forecast for Saturday May 12th was a big exception.

The mainstream news casts insisted on gale force offshore wind Friday night in to Saturday then transitioning into a slight southerly flow
with fog beginning to work its way into the area late in afternoon. From previous similar forecasts crews mya have expect a light spinnaker
run out the gate from the start before riding the ebb through a transition zone, switching to headsails, up to Duxbury Reef, a reach or possibly run
to the Entrance Buoy followed by a runs back into the gate.

However, conditions had changed in the early morning hours, and a strong south westerly had already started working its way up the coast and the
starting area off the Golden Gate Yacht Club was already seeing winds into the 20 knot range for the 10:00 start of the 31.8 nm trip. As sailmaker John Amen, who was sailing
aboard Warren Holybee's Morgan 382 Eliana as a practice for the Pacific Cup, pointed out "Things got snotty really quickly". Mal de ...

Richard Gladwell ofSail-World.com delivers the goods on a new American Syndicate:

A second US team for the America's Cup has been working on a challenge for over a year - predating Emirates Team New Zealand's win in Bermuda on June 26, 2017.

"About a year ago, or maybe a little more, Taylor Canfield and I were approached and told that if another team won the America's Cup, then you guys should put together a Challenge. That put the idea in our heads, and when Team New Zealand won in Bermuda, it opened the door to mount a Challenge of our own."

"The hardest thing obviously is raising money," explains Mike Buckley one of Taylor Canfield's crew - now one of two crews who are four-time winners of the Congressional Cup, one of the most prestigious trophies in match racing.

Buckley is an American professional sailor ...
