    20' Waves Smacking The Wedge

Bobby Okvist, 18, of Newport Beach bails off his board after riding a large wave at the Wedge in Newport Beach.
Some waves, from a south swell originating in the Pitcairn Island area of the South Pacific, were reaching 20 feet on the face.

ah.... memories. '65 ---- '70 Duckfeet fin (only one), baggies with an industrial strength tie string. No boogie boards, surfboards. There was however an occasional belly-board, dangerous little things.... fiberglass over foam, very sharp pointy front end, fairly deep, sharp skeg or skegs --- no leash. Kinda pissed you off when run into or over by the guy trying to steer. Loose they created a few problems too.

Make a little timing error when tucking into the bottom of the wave at the end of your ride and you received a graphic example of the procedure known as Dermabrasion.

Wet sanding is also easily understood.
