Mark Foy Trophy Regatta Lands In SF for 1st Time

The Mark Foy Trophy heads to San Francisco for the 1st time, beginning September 7th and running through September 8th. The event is the International Traveling Championship* of the International 18' Skiff fleet, which originated in Sydney Australia and has gained popularity world wide in past decades and has strong holds in Europe, New Zealand and San Francisco.

    * The JJ Giltinan's are the "Unofficial World Championships," but because they are not I.S.A.F. Sanctioned you can't use the word "World Championship"...and don't you try mister!

The International 18's (aka Aussie 18's) will celebrate 12 consecutive years on San Francisco Bay this summer, all due to the efforts and drive of Howie Hamlin who gambled on the events success back in 2002, and has seen great returns and many satisfied customers in the 12 years since. The images accompanying this piece from the original 2002 event, to present some perspective.

The 2013 event will be the largest event in 18' Skiff's on SF Bay history with currently 19 boats registered and 1 or two more expected to register before the start. In that group will be 8 Kiwi teams, which will be the biggest turn out for New Zealand at the Mark Foy for an event not held in Zew Zealand in some time. When asked about the large turn out, Howie Hamlin alludes to the rapid ascension of Kiwi's in the 18's circuit,
and growing popularity in Auckland in particular. The Kiwi teams to watch are C-Tech, skippered by Alex Vallings, David McDiarmid's Yamaha and the godfather of the Kiwi fleet, Graham Catley and his boat Maersk, whic provides shipping containers to get the boats from point A to point B...Important shizzle in this international racing thingy!

Also new to the event, the Euro teams, 2 from Germany, 1 from Denmark and 1 from Great Britain. "These are all talented teams", Says Howie, who helped recruit them.
"Most teams from Europe have wanted to come to San Francisco for some time, but it's right in the middle of their sailing season in Europe, so it's a tough sell."

The racing will happen off the Marina Green, where a large ramp has built to launch and retrieve boats. The mark shall be set by ACRM, so expect a similar layout a tad further east than you might have seen in the 11 years previously. Will there be wind limits for the event you ask? "We don't have no steenking wind limits" Laughs race director Robbie Dean, who's club the StFYC is hosting the event in cooperation with the ACRM and the AC Open. So If you are in the Marina for the AC Finals from the 7th through the 15th, stick around, the after party might just be more entertaining than
    the Main Event!

Check out this restoration on one of the old Skiff Sailing Foundation boats!

Patrick Lewis and crew has put some major effort into this one!

    New Boat name: "Sparkle Motion."

    Say Patrick:

"Used to be the white skiff sailing hull. Before, you'd have to ask Chad or JV.

Driving, Dan Roberts aka Sid Vicious
    Trim, James Clappier, the hippie
    Bow, patrick Lewis, stinky

Ian Andrews might be driving sat and Sunday, and Andy Goodman might make a guest appearance later on.

Wasn't sure it was going to come together!"
