    DSC Calling: Who's Gonna Answer?

With an ear shattering blast that just got louder and louder, the Oakland YC jumped to attention
Wednesday night as the 1st DSC practice signal was tested. With represenatives from the
USCG, Chief of Waterways LCDR Amy Wirts, Specialist Mike Carlson, Senior Chief Doug Samp
and OS1 Seth Roedl presenting and presiding, the shrill alarm resounded through the building
without alarming the rescuers back at the base. BAMA's annual DH Farallones Skippers meeting was under
    way

The age of Digital Selective Callingis here, and is more reliable and simpler to operate
thank ever. Previous editions were clunky and involved wiring to and communicating with your GPS.
Today's edition have the gps built but you can still hook it up with you chart plotter for even more options
such as way points and distances. The registration for the radios is simple and you only need a few
pieces of documentation with you to sort out, follow the links from Here

The OYC house was all ears for the DSC discussion and trial.

Even the bottom end of the prices scale handheld DSC integrated radio picks up and displays
an emergency signal, even if you have not yet registered it.

You can use the same registration for your hand held and fixed mount, if you are a boat bouncer and want the security
of your own handheld you bring with your seabag, you can re-register as often as you wish by simply changing the boats
pertinents in your registration profile. With the cooperative coordination of regattas governing body, the coasties can pull
up all the information they need instantly and pinpoint location from gps coordinates and radio transmission lines. As learned in the
Slow Speed Chase tragedy, even with folks communicating vocally, the transmissions can be garbled and difficult to hear.

The additional benefit is the nearby boats and their act as a repeater, aiding in the continuation of the signal until it arrives
at the USCG. By acknowledging the signal, your boat is added to the communications, and you will get the location of distressed
vessel, along with course to and distance from. This can be a critical life saver when minutes can mean a happy outcome or the alternative.

While still useful, the Personal Locator Beacon, or EPIRB are more dependant on satellites passing over to triangulate your position, this is probably
ideal for offshore situations, when assist can be hours or days away, but for local offshore, especially when sailing with a fleet around you, the
DSC is a nice peace of mind item to have in your kit.

"BAMA has a safety hierarchical approach of prevention through education, self rescue, fleet rescue and finally Coast Guard rescue. While it would be great if every boat and every person had every possible type of safety gear- its just not practical. The latest generation of Class D DSC- VHF-GPS radio in both fixed mount and handheld configuration are a powerful and high value tool in all rescues levels. Entry to the DHF required such a radio with MMSI registration."

    Bob Naber
    BAMA

Andy Newell from OYRA came to meeting to assist and bring lessons learned to to OYRA,
Mark Eastham from Ma's Rover provided the vessel in distress call..

    Free Aerial Images Link

As a courtesy to the offshore racers and the need for images to produce for eligibility requirements and to aide in any S&R responses, the nice folks
at Pressure Drop have provided a gallery of images for free, to use in that endeavour. Higher res image gallery will follow, but those will be pay to play.

Please leave water mark on so OA and S&R personnel can track higher res images if need be...
