    How The Pros Do It

This is not a dream, although it is dream like...

Nothing like arriving to your marina after a long day of sailing your boat in 25 to 30 knots of wind
around the Farallones all by yourself and then pull into the slip and have a nice hot pizza and cold beer
waiting for you. Its' the little things in life.

Names are omitted to protect the innocent...

It was certainly blowing out there. We didn't reef during the windy DH Farallones and flogged the mainsail a good bit on the final approach...... this time I had the reef in from the Lightship on and was still flogging the mainsail so I know it was breeze on. Some nice large sets rolled through now and again. I had a few f’ups on the way out that cost me 3-5 minutes on course, totally my doing. That would have got me 1st in division and a few moves up the overall, congrats to Phil on Wetsu for the div win. The real time loss was after the island when I tried to shake out my reef and realized I didn’t pull the luff rope back down through the pre-feeder. I tried for a long while but I just kept pulling the luff out from the mast groove. Even turned the boat sailing to weather (=neg. VMG) to try and couldn’t do it. So I put the reef back after a long while of trying. Likely would have gotten me 2nd overall but I don’t think sailing the course perfect would have gotten me an overall over the Wyliecat 30. Still had enough power for long wave to wave surfs but it would have been a much higher sustained speed return with the full main in effect. The autopilot bested my driving with a high of 18.2K on the return leg. Set the small flat masthead spinnaker near Bonita for the final run in.

Received this notation from Tim Cavers who was sailing the Olson 25 Rock On acknowledging that kite flying was indeed attempted during Saturday's reach fest!

Great article and photos of the sss farallones race. I noticed you wrote that it was a non spinnaker division throughout the fleet. Point of fact: I saw Phil Krasner in his express 27 fly his kite just after rounding the islands. Yes, alas I saw him from behind, and I didn't see him for long! Impressive in those winds!
