    Gladiator joins the Pac52 Class!

    Team Gladiator Project Manager, Tom Wilson, has confirmed that Gladiator will join the Pac52 Class this Fall and for 2018. Gladiator is owned by Tony Langley of Royal Thames Yacht Club. The Yacht is designed by Judel / Vrolijk & Co and was built by Persico in 2015. Gladiator will join Fox, Invisible Hand Racing, BadPak, Rio Racing USA and Beau Geste Racing at Pac52 Cup this Fall in San Francisco and for the 2018 season.

    Gladiator's Tom Wilson on the West Coast Campaign

    With the news of one of the stalwarts of the TP52 Class signing on to join in with the PAC 52 class for the 2017
    Championship Race in San Francisco and the 2018 season, we asked Tom Wilson, Gladiator Project Manager a few questions
    to get us up to speed:

    Team Gladiator

    PD: Tom, tell us a bit about the Team Gladiator Project? How long the group has been together, it's nucleaus and prior projects?

    TW: Tony (the owner) started competitive sailing big boats in the UK in the 90's his first race boat was a farr 45 Atomic which was campaigned in the solent.

    He started in the 52 fleet in the med in 2009 with his first TP52 Weapon of Choice. Ex Matador 07.

    At the end of 2010 Gladiator sailing team was born and the 09 Artemis boat was purchased and renamed Gladiator. This boat is still campaigned now and having just won Cowes week with it we are off to NZ for Bay Week.

    In 2015 we built a new boat for the super series and campaigned this in the SS for 2 seasons as well as various events in the UK on the 09 boat. After Key West 2017 there was an option to get out of phase with the SS fleet and buy a new generation boat this was done and with Tony's love for the US and it's sailing scene he decided to keep the 2015 boat this side of the pond. Having toured the east coast with fun and success rumours were that there was a pretty decent 52 class developing on the West coast. Tony not being one to miss out on an opportunity to go sailing realised we could squeeze in another event to the calendar making the PAC Cup the 14th regatta this year for the Gladiator Sailing Team!


    PD: If we are correct, Tony Langley still owns 2 Gladiators, the older red 2009 edition, built by Cookson for Artemis in 2009, and the new black boat, built by Persico in 2015(?) Can you tell us the minute differences in the the two boats and performance between the two?

    Differences between 09 & 17 are huge but 15 and 17 are not so big we are still learning the 17 boat but initial signs show performance gains in MOST conditions but not all!!!! As the results from the last regatta show we still have a lot to learn.



    PD: Which of the two will be joining the PAC 52's in San Francisco and the 2018 season?

    TW: The 2015 JV Boat

    PD: The new Gladiator recieved a rude welcome in Miami when it was T-Boned ny Sled, but the team bounced back and raced in the older boat. How did the team rally to get back on their feet?

    TW: As you can imagine one race into the regatta in our new boat coming 2nd in the race we were all gutted when the crash happened.
    This just shows the strength in depth of our team. Knowing we had a spare boat just 70 miles up the coast we were never going to pull out of the regatta. We managed to turn a boat around that was sat in the yard in West Palm Beach ready for trucking to Charleston to racing in Miami in 24 hrs. A huge effort from not only the shore team but also the sailors. While all this was going I also knew that we had something major to achieve to get the 2017 boat back on the water for the first event in the med. So within hours plans were made to get this boat ready for shipping to our friends at Persico who we knew would be up for the challenge. The rest they say is history the boat is as good as new.

    PD: What was the impetus to engage in the PAC 52 events in 2018 and will that mean Gladiator will not compete in the 2018 Med Cup?


    TW: Tony's love for sailing..... He cant get enough of the sport you will be hard pushed to find another man so committed to our sport he's a legend. We are still 100% committed to the Super Series right now. This takes priority over all other sailing for us. We are very grateful that the PAC 52 class have invited us to join in with them and we hope this won't be a one off

    PD: Any rumors of any additional Med Cup boats/teams considering joing the PAC 52 Circuit?

    TW: 52 Super Series is still probably the highest level of monohull sailing in the world right now, however with rumours of a few new boats for next year in the med if Gladiator can prove to be competitive at this regatta you may see some of the 2015 generation boats heading this way. I personally think it's a bit of a shame the two classes couldn't have joined forces a little more and been a bit closer with their box rules. With the Super Series making a bi-annual trip to the US I'm sure it would have encouraged owners to the West Coast for a few events!

    When do they expect to be sailing in SF? The original story says "this fall" but will this include BBS, or just the PAC-52 Cup in late September?

    My understanding is the boat won't be ready for this years BBS but will be here in time for the Championships later in September.

    Getting In Tune



    It was and intense but complete afternoon of drills, sets douses and gear checks this weekend for
    Frank Slootman's PAC 52 Invisible Hand as the crew worked through the paces ahead of next week's
    Big Boat Series hosted by the StFYC



    Hard to believe that just 1 year ago, Victor Wild's FOX was the sole representative for the BBS,
    Arguably the West Coast Premier Regatta.



    This year, she finds herself in good company with 4 siblings in the stable for the Big Boat Series,
    Invisible Hand, Tom Holthus's Bad Pak, Manouch Moshayedi's RIO and Karl Kwock's Beau Geste filling out a bracket
    of evenly matched 52's on the line for some high energy action, putting "Grand Prix" back in to the BBS lexicon
    for the 1st time in some time.




    Joining the fun a couple weeks later for the Inaugural PAC 52 Cup, Tony Langley's Gladiator,
    putting 6 boats on the line for what is most certain to be a sight to behold as they march across SF Bay
    in the glorious fall weather.




    Gavin Brady, the godfather of the PAC 52' movement will be on board Karl Kwock's Beau Geste for the
    races coming up, but was a key player in getting Invisible Hand up to snuff for the Transpac and Long Beach Race Week,
    And will be the lead man for the entire 2018 program. Gavin, who has been around the 52's since the inception, brings a wealth
    of knowledge as well as key players, mostly Kiwis, that have been there and done that on the 52's over the recent past.

    To quote crewmember Rueben Gabriel: "The talent and ability to coach is just amazing, there is no detail that goes unnoticed, and the learning curve
    took a huge jump when Gavin came onboard"



    During the 5 hour or so Sunday session, the crew went through fast repetitions of skills needing honing with little time on the rail taking in the scenery.
    Thoughtful discourse would follow and adjustments made with crew input adding to the discussion. Even a purposeful roundup to allow the driver and crew
    to feel where the edge was and how the new rudder would react. The newly installed line drop spool tested and careful instruction on how to wind it properly.

    Owner Frank Slootman is more than giddy with the recent progress, and recognizes that grand prix racers need some grand prix crew: " It's a level well above the
    club racing boats we have sailed in the past, and being competitive really demands some experienced members. But the great thing is these boats are so evenly matched,
    any team can win any given race"





    With all eyes on the PAC 52 class in the Big Boat Series, the opportunity to shine in the spotlight is afoot. The class is growing and any prospective owners that wish
    to join in should look into it deeper. With boats like Vesper and Spookie on the market at deep discount prices, it's an inexpensive option. But the offshore package option
    on a new vessel, would pay dividends for years. Gavin notes that the offshore 52s have been doing very well in major events, and with [I}Invisible Hand[/I] and Bad Pak
    going 1-2 in the Transpac, it's hard not to be impressed. He adds that all the pieces from Cookson's are still in place and boat building personnel are ready to rumble.
