    Round The County 2017

112 Boats in 8 division took part in the 30th annual "ROUND the COUNTY" sailboat race. This event, held November 11th and 12th, 2017 in the gorgeous and challenging waters of San Juan County Washington. The race is approximately 76 miles with an overnight stop in Roche Harbor, San Juan Island. Due to the great venue, the better winds of November, and the overnight stop in Roche Harbor, the race has become one of the more popular in the Pacific Northwest.

The Sailing itinerary for the Round The County event is:

Friday night November 10th rendezvous at the Orcas Island Yacht Club, in West Sound, Orcas Island. Enjoy the no host cocktail party, free hors d'oeuvres, pre-race briefing , skipper's meeting, and inflated/deflated stories from years past.

Saturday November 11th the start is at Lydia Shoal, in Rosario Strait, just East of Obstruction Pass. The course starts to the North this year, past Orcas Island, around Clark, Matia, Sucia, and Patos Islands, then continues down Boundary Pass past the Turn Point Light House and finishes for the day at Roche Harbor.

Sunday November 12th the second leg starts in Mosquito Bay, south of Henry Island. The course continues South along the shore of San Juan Island, across Salmon Bank, around Lopez, Decatur and Blakely Islands to finish again at Lydia Shoal. An Awards dinner follows at the Orcas Island Yacht Club.

    Reflections:
What a great weekend for racing with plenty of wind to get the entire fleet around the full course legs. The forecast rain for the most part left us alone. We loved the time together with our crew in Roche Harbor Saturday night and visiting with other boats on the docks. There was one of the strangest finishes Saturday night out side of Roche that I remember. Challenging and memorable apply. Super fun weekend. Thanks go to Charley Rathkopf for running the starts like clock work and for getting the results posted in a timely fashion — with the help on dozens of volunteers from the Orcas Island Yacht Club and the Friday Harbor Sailing Clubs.
