Alive Sets New Monterey To Santa Barbara Benchmark!

Records falling in the Coastal Cup race this year with a new Elapsed Time record for the Monterey to Santa Barbara course.

Phillip Turner's RP 66' Alive has 2 line honors in the 2019 California Offshore Race Week after taking the Coastal Cup
with an elapsed time of 13:48:28. A triumphant return of the former Stark Raving Madbuilt for Jim Madden in 2006, competed in
a multitude of Southern California events before being sold to Peter Harburg and moving to Queensland, Australia.

"Stark Raving Mad III" is a carbon fiber, canting-keel racer, designed by Reichel-Pugh (San Diego, CA) and built by Westerly Marine (Santa Ana, CA). The keel hydraulics are from Central Coast Hydraulics (Australia). Other major components include a rig and spars from Hall Spars (Rhode Island), sails by North (US), winches by Lewmar (UK), deck hardware by Harken, rudder and forward board by Henry Elliott (Rhode Island), electronics by Ockam, propulsion unit from Private Parts (Australia), and wheels from McConaughy (Australia). She was launched for testing and fit-out in January '06 in San Diego. She spent much of 2006 racing on the East Coast in Florida, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. He victories include a 1st in Class at the New York Yacht Club Race Week, and a new course record for the Ida Lewis Distance Race. She then went to the west coast where she competed in several west coast races, winning many. She was awarded Newport Harbor Yacht Club's "Boat of the Year" for 2006. She was purchased by a new buyer in May 2008, and was shipped to Australia where she races under the name "Black Jack".

Previously known as Stark Raving Mad, Black Jack is a near-sistership to the highly successful Wild Oats X, and the two have crossed swords on many occasions with almost even results. Owner Peter Harburg and his champion skipper Mark Bradford (who was in the afterguard of Investec Loyal which took line honours last year) have produced solid results, including line and overall honours in the 2008 and 2009 Brisbane-Keppel races, in which they broke their own 2008 race record in 2009, in the new time of 29 hours 24 minutes 11 seconds.

Named for Harburg's friend, Jack Brabham, the boat was sixth across the line in the 2008 Rolex Sydney Hobart (her last adventure south) and went on to win back to back line honours in the Brisbane to Gladstone race (2009 and 2010). In August, Bradford skippered the canting keeler to second over the line and recorded the second fastest time ever in the Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, breaking Brindabella's(a conventionally ballasted yacht) 13 year-old record. Black Jack can now claim the second fastest time for the Open record after finishing in 26hrs 24mins 2 secs. She was also the first Queensland boat home.
Congratulations to Alive Yachting on the new course record, beating SC70 Catapult's 2017 record by 55 mins, 53 seconds.
