    Tragedy On Monterey Bay

    MONTEREY, Calif. —

Thursday 11:40am update: Rick Srigley of Pebble Beach is the sailor swept overboard and killed Wednesday evening on the Monterey Bay. Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club Commodore Sharron Frey issued the following statement :

"Wednesday evening, March 13, the crew of Morpheus, a Moore 24 sailing vessel, encountered heavy weather while sailing off the Monterey coast. Skipper Rick Srigley was washed overboard off the transom. His crew attempted to recover him while calling the Coast Guard. They brought him to the boat, but were unable to get him out, at which time the Coast Guard took charge, and took Rick by ambulance to the hospital.

Tragically, Rick Srigley passed away as a result of the evening’s events. The Membership of MPYC is mourning the loss of an experienced sailor and a dear friend. Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt support go out to Rick’s family. We ask for all to hold them in your hearts and prayers.

    Sad news.

It seems conditions were not that extreme on Wednesday, but air and water temperature are still on chilly side.

    Cardiac arrest?

    Condolences to family and friends.
