    St Barths Sparkles For Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille



    Picture-perfect conditions greeted the fleets to kickstart the 10th anniversary edition of Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille
    as the nine classes raced around the west side of St. Barth on racecourses ranging from 24 – 36 nautical miles in 15 – 20 knots of breeze.

    Of the 2019 entries, almost 30 percent are first-timers, a sure sign of this regatta’s popularity known for delivering the perfect
    blend of great racing, gorgeous scenery and the St. Barth signature relaxed shoreside atmosphere.

    “Everything about this regatta is so nice,” said Marijn Van der Straaten, the Dutch sailor from Curacao, here for the first time
    racing in CSA 5. “I like the harbor here, and how all the boats and the Race Village are all so close together.
    The set up makes it so much more personal. This is how a regatta should be.“

    CSA 1

    In CSA 1, Kuka3 (Cookson 50), leads the fleet of seven, followed by Pata Negra in 2nd, and Triple Lindy, the second Cookson 50 of the fleet, in 3rd.

    According to Rob Trainor, sailing on board Triple Lindy, the boat is named by owner Joseph Mele in tribute for Rodney Dangerfield’s
    signature move from the classic movie “Back to School,” The team represents at least six countries and has sailed around the world
    in events such as Sydney to Hobart and now Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille.

    The Kid, a JP 54 skippered by Jean-Pierre Dick, is currently in 5th place. “The game was quite tight, especially with both Cookson 50s,”
    he said. ‘The maneuvers were very important. I think we have done well today overall with no major mishaps and clean maneuvers.
    I’ve known St. Barth for a long time, but this is the first time I’ve sailed at this regatta, and it’s so beautiful racing along the beautiful coastline.”











    CSA 5

    Credit Mutuel – SGS begins 2019 event in the same form they finished the 2018 edition – sitting in first. Team Island Water World,
    the smallest boat in the regatta, is in 2nd, and Maelia Caisse d’Epargne Cepac Antilles is in 3rd.

    Currently in 4th, the J105 Sunbelt Realty Jenk team hails from Caracou and Bonaire, and is thrilled to be racing at
    Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille for the first time. “We love to sail new regattas each year, to see new things and learn new islands,”
    said Van der Straaten, who is tactician on board.

    CSA 3

    For John Vincent, skipper of the chartered TP42 Phan, it’s his first time racing here in St. Barth as well. Hailing from Santa Barbara, Calif.,
    he is already calling it, “A magical experience. The whole island is incredible, the people, the food, plus the boats that are here are off the charts,
    it is all just incredible. It’s already the most special sailing experience I have ever had, and I’ve been sailing my whole life.”

    Vincent is sailing with his long-time crews that he races with between California on a J111 and Florida on his Aerodyne 38.
    “We hit 20 knots of boat speed today and that’s just a fun thing to do. My other boats are a little smaller than this, and this boat is 30% faster.

    “We were first to finish, so that always feels good, but will have to see how the ratings work out for us. A few technical issues but we feel like
    we can pick up more time as the regatta continues, but overall for our first day racing I give us a B+ score.”

    Phan currently sits in 3rd place and will have their work cut out for them racing against Les Voiles’ regulars, the Melges 32s Lazy Dog and
    Kick ‘em Jenny, in 1st and 2nd respectively; with Taz, a Reichel Pugh 37, in fourth.











    CSA 4

    Another Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille first timer is Chris Brody, skipper/owner of El Ocaso, a J122, who has also fallen under St. Barth’s charms.

    “We already love it here, and have just had a ball. We’re here from the UK with my family and some of my regular crew.
    Although we didn’t do as well as we hoped today, we expect to improve as the regatta continues,” he said with a smile.

    Conditions were lovely, we had a bit of everything, some light, some heavy and it’s all good. It’s our first time back on the boat in almost
    a year so we have to remind ourselves how to sail her again. It’s always the little things and the fleet continues to improve, so if you make
    small mistakes you get hammered for it.”

    Across the eight-boat fleet in CSA 4 is Holding Pattern (ST 37), Liquid (J122), El Ocaso (J122), followed by Touch2Play Racing (Reflex 38)
    in first through fourth, respectively.



    Maxi 1 & 2

    In the three-boat fleet of Maxi 1, currently Sorcha sits in 1st, and is skippered this year by Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille 2019’s ambassador,
    Pierre Casiraghi. SHK Scallywag, the Dowell 100 is in 2nd, followed by Ambersail 2 in 3rd.

    Miles Seddon, navigator for SHK Scallywag, was pleased with their first day out. “What a nice day – we had great wind, a few small squalls came
    through which made it a bit gusty and shifty,” he said. “It was a really nice course, and a really good effort.”

    In Maxi 2, the Swan 80 Selene owned by Wendy Schmidt, sits in 1st, followed by Windfall and Sojana.

    Collisions And Protests In Distance Race @ LVSBRM



    Day Two delivered a Caribbean-perfect easterly 15-17 knots for the 10th edition of Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille for the 1,000+ sailors to complete one distance race between 21 – 34 miles dependent upon their class. While too early to place any bets, patterns are forming across seven of the nine classes with consistent 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. But as a Maxi collision and a Multi pre-start protest today demonstrate, no lead is safe. Here is today’s recap from Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille.

    Protests Impact Maxi 2 & Multihull IMRR
    Only 40 minutes into Tuesday’s race, Selene (Swan 80) and Caro (Botin 65) in the Maxi 2 class called in their retirements after a port – starboard incident that caused damage to both boats.

    “It was great conditions and racing out there today,” said Tom Burnham, a trimmer on board Selene. “We were with a large group of boats doing a lot of close maneuvers, and in one of them we were on starboard when Caro tacked to port, they attempted to duck but unfortunately hit us on our back-end port side.”

    Burnham, who is also the coach for the new United States SailGP Team, confirmed they will not be racing tomorrow, as the team needs to further assess the damage. The team is hopeful they can return to finish the regatta later this week.

    The regatta’s signature “day off” mid-regatta on Thursday may help give the team an extra day to make repairs and return to racing for Friday and Saturday.
    After placing second yesterday and first today, Windfall, who is last year’s winner, now sits first overall in the Maxi 2 class, followed by Sojana.


    Alexia Barrier, sailing on board Sojana said the competition is very close between the two boats. “It’s impressive to see how Windfall has progressed in recent years; but we on Sojana are fighting a good battle and we know there are no room for mistakes, especially in the maneuvers. We must keep improving if we want to finish ahead of them this week.”












    In Multihull IMRR, Hallucine skippered by Régis Guillemot and yesterday’s leader, ended today disqualified for a pre-start altercation with Arawak – Team Spellbound by Ian Martin. Martin is now hoping to capitalize on the opportunity to take over first in the class.

    In Multihull ORCmh, Greg Slynstad’s Fujin, Stephen Cucchiaro’s Flow, and R-SIX began staking claim on the podium with repeat 1 – 2- 3 place finishes today.

    CSA 1
    Over in CSA 1, Kuka 3, skippered by Franco Niggeler also enjoyed another successful day at Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille. “Today’s conditions continued to deliver,” Niggeler said. “We made one or two small mistakes but overall we are happy with our day. It was challenging sailing, however, with the shifty conditions and confused sea state. We hope we did as well today because we are clearly here in St. Barth’s to win!”
    Triple Lindy moved up one spot to second place, tied with on points with Pata Negra. The next battle developing is between The Kid and Hermes are next tied on nine points in fourth and fifth place.

    Day 4 Richard Mille Les Voiles de St Barth



    The breeze freshened back up to 18-21 knots for Friday’s racing at the 10th edition of Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille, and race organizers sent the Maxi and Multihull classes on a 34-nautical mile course to battle it out for the 2019 Richard Mille Record Trophy. In the Maxi class, SHK Scallywag skippered by David Witt took line honors in 2hr 33min 53sec, and Greg Slyngstad’s Fujin finished less than three minutes behind in 2hrs 36min 33sec for the Multihull Record.

    CSA 1 – 5 had two races today between 12 – 14 miles, and while the overall podium positions are solidifying across the fleets, the results do not necessarily reflect the close competition, tight finishes and fun racing, according to Larry Huiber of Touch2Play racing in CSA 4.

    For 2019, the Richard Mille Record Trophy race was a 34 nautical-mile course to Saint Martin and back to St. Barth, a perfect race track for the 100’ Maxi formerly known as Ragamuffin to stretch her legs.
    “We are obviously delighted that SHK Scallywag is named this year’s Trophy winner,” said Phil Harmer, two-time Volvo Ocean Race winner who sails on board SHK Scallywag. “SHK Scallywag is made for long-distance races and she is obviously more comfortable when the course gets a little longer.”

    Skipper David Witt agreed. In his first time sailing Les Voiles, he was pleased to learn he helped earn the Richard Mille Record Trophy for the team and owner Sung Huang Lee, who was here driving the boat earlier this week.

    “The last three days have been beautiful sailing in a beautiful place – it doesn’t get much better. It sure beats going around the world,” Witt said with a laugh. “For us, this event is great practice to help us work toward our goal at the end of the year to race in the Sydney to Hobart Race.”

    Today’s distance race also doubles toward points in the overall Maxi 1 series and Peter Harrison’s Sorcha, skippered by Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille’s Regatta Ambassador Pierre Casiraghi, won the day on corrected time to continue their perfect scoreline. Ambersail rounds out the three-boat class in 3rd.










    In Maxi 2, Sir Peter Harrison’s Sojana cracked the top spot today to beat Michael Cotter’s Windfall.
    “This has been our best day,” Harrison said. “Earlier in the week we had a third, two seconds and now today we earned a first. We’ve been battling with Windfall all week and have been within seconds of each other all the time. Now we sit just two points behind. While I don’t think we can win, but it has been a good racing week with lovely winds.”

    Multihulls
    Hallucine earned the win today in Multihull IMHRR. Régis Guillemot is pleased with how the team has recovered from its disqualification Tuesday after a pre-start foul. “That was an expensive mistake, because otherwise we have won almost every other race. But that is the game.”
    Guillemot loved the racing conditions today, “We had a really fun day – what great conditions. We were flying a hull the whole time.”
    Hallucine (12 points) currently sits in 2nd overall behind Guyador Gastronomie (6 points), and ahead of Arawak-Team Spellbound (16 points), who is tied on points with Rayon Vert in 4th place.

    In ORCmh, Stephen Cucchiaro’s Flow, a Gunboat 60, returned to action today with a first-place finish (retired from Wednesday’s race with a ripped mainsail), followed by the 2019 Richard Mille Record Trophy winner Fujin, who placed second on corrected time. R-SIX finished third today, and sits in 2nd place overall.












    CSA 1 – 5
    The leaders of CSA 2 (Andrew Berdon’s Summer Storm), CSA 3 (Sergio Sagramoso’s Lazy Dog) and CSA 5 (Claude Granel and Marc Emig’s Credit Mutuel – SGS ) will carry their perfect 1st place scorelines heading into tomorrow, the last day of the 10th edition of Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille.

    But the finishes and overall scorelines don’t necessarily reflect how close the racing is across the classes, according to Larry Huiber who races on board Touch2Play Racing in CSA 4. Touch2Play Racing finished the second race today with a 2nd place, “by just one second!” said Larry Huiber.

    “Every race we are all finishing within moments of each other. It makes you keep sailing hard all the time, especially with all of the different ratings within your class because you can’t be content to just get in front and cover your competitors.”

    He credited Touch2Play’s competition for challenging them constantly. “The Liquid team is sailing really well, and Holding Pattern has such great talent on board. Any chance we have to be close to them we know we are in rarified air.”
    Current standings for CSA 4: Pamela Baldwin’s Liquid has a solid hold on first place with six points overall; followed by Holding Pattern in 2nd with 15 points; and Touch2Play Racing in 3rd place with 16 points.
