    Espirit de corps IV Holed And Sunk Near Halifax

    Vessel ran aground on island after sail became caught in propeller.

    A group of three university students training on a Canadian Coast Guard zodiac rescued eight people from a sailboat that ran aground on an island near Lunenburg, N.S., early Wednesday morning.

    Marc Ouellette, a regional supervisor with the Halifax Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, said the initial report came in at 3:20 a.m.

    The 19˝-metre sailboat drifted into Cross Island, near the entrance to Lunenburg harbour, after a sail went overboard and was caught in boat's propeller.

    Ouellette said a Mahone Bay Inshore Rescue zodiac, which is used in a summer program to train university students to crew fast-rescue boats, was dispatched. Three students on board were able to rescue the eight crew members.

    "They start May long weekend, so they've only been operational for less than a week now," Oullette said of the students.

    Ouellette said the boat is part of the coast guard's inshore rescue program. There are three students on each vessel, including a team lead who is often a returning student.

    A tugboat called the Salvage Monarch was also on scene and the people rescued from the sailboat were transferred from the zodiac.

    Ouellette said the sailing vessel was coming back to Canada from Bermuda.




    Bill Flower, who took photos of the boat after it ran ashore, identified it as the Esprit de corps IV.

    "There was a significant hole on the starboard side of the vessel," Ouellette said. "So they abandoned and there was no attempt to refloat the vessel."

    The boat is still stranded on the island.

    Ouellette said the recovery of the vessel is the responsibility of the owner, but the coast guard will monitor it from an environmental perspective.







    HISTORY
    For the first edition of the round-the-world race under the Volvo brand, there was a real combination of European talents surrounding Amer Sports One Team.

    The design of the yacht was attributed to German “Mani” Frers, and the construction began in La Ciotat, France, with the builder Composite Works. Adding two famous names of yacht building was to be a winning bet, based on differentiation, for the Italian-Finish consortium Amer Sports. Indeed, during this edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, 6 of the 8 yachts were signed by Farr Yacht Design.

    Grant Dalton, a skipper from New-Zealand with already 4 participations in the Whitbread, was to lead the team. In his project around the world, he had the support of Paul Cayard, skipper and winner of the previous edition of race onboard EF Language.

    Amer Sports One finished at the third place of the race, right behing Illbruck Challenge and Assa Abloy.

    Half a decade later, the yacht is bought by Canadian skipper Derek Hatfield, who gives her a new name : Spirit of Adventure. At that time, and after 2 Velux Around the World Race with his IMOCA 60 Spirit of Canada, Hatfield was seeking to develop a race chartering company.

    With this new yacht, Hatlfield participated in many races in Europe to North America with amateurs wanting to live the sensations of ocean racing.

    In 2010, Hatfield even sets a new record for the Halifax to Saint Pierre Ocean Race, in 29h, 43min, and 56sec.
    In 2016, the yacht is acquired by Gilles Barbot, and renamed Esprit de Corps IV. She was to be skippered by Derek Hatfield who joined the ambitions of Atlas Ocean Racing, but sadly, Hatfield passed away in July 2016.

    Derek’s career remains a true source of inspiration for our team, and it’s with that spirit of boldness and sharing that we continue to sail on this true flagship of our fleet. Since 2017, our crew members join during winter time to take part in international races on this yacht.

    The Ocean Sailboat Spirit of corps iv in return of its race season in the Caribbean has failed on cross island, around 4 AM AST, this Wednesday, may 22th.

    While the sailboat was only 20 NM from its arrival Port Lunenburg, NS, and under very reduced wing, strong coastal winds of up to 50 kts have complicated the maneuver of the of the wing Just before the entrance in the channel leading to the port. The strong gusts and a failure of the propulsion system finally pushed the sailboat to cross island where it failed. A Pan Pan call was launched by radio to ask for a tow, but a water lane finally brought up the emergency level in mayday.

    The Skipper of the ferry, Maxime Grimard, in consistency with his sea survival certifications and the safety protocols of the atlas sailing team decided to prioritize the integrity of the crew in his decisions throughout the event.

    The 8 Sailboat Team members benefited from the exemplary support of the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as the MV salvage monarch tug to be evacuated safely to lunenburg. The full crew is safe and sound and there is no injured.

    The Atlas Racing team has immediately set up a waste and debris disposal management protocol on the coast to limit the environmental impact of the event (plan presented to the Canadian coast guard environmental intervention section).

    The Atlas Sailing Team, Maxime Grimard, as well as the official owner and skipper of the sailboat Gilles Barbot are in full planning of towing in collaboration with the insurance and local experts for an initiative within the fastest time possible.

    We will keep you informed of the steps of the recovery of the wreck that will follow an inspection and assessment of possible repairs or not as soon as the water comes out.

    Breaking news

    At 4am AST on the 22nd of May, whilst returning from a season of racing in the Caribbean, SV Esprit de Corps IV was shipwrecked on Cross Island, NS.

    20nm before Lunenburg, NS, her final port of destination, and under a very reduced set of sails, gale force winds complicated the manoeuvre of dousing the sails before entering the chanel leading to Lunenburg. The strong gusts and a loss of the ability to use the propeller led the boat to drift towards Cross Island where she ran aground. The crew prompted a PAN PAN to get the boat towed but later a water breech made the situation to upgrade to MAYDAY.

    Maxime Grimard, skipper of the delivery of Esprit de Corps IV, acted in accordance with his safety in offshore sailing certifications and with the team's safety procedures by protecting the crew first and foremost.

    The 8 crew members of the sailboat wish to thank the Canadian Coast Guard and the crew of MV Salvage Monarch for their exemplary assistance in evacuating the crew. All members of the crew returned to land safe and sound.

    After the crew, the team's next priority became the recuperation of the vessel for environmental reasons and in order to salvage any equipment left. The team has set a protocol in motion to handle the recovery of any wasteful debris, in collaboration with Environmental Response of the Canadian Coast Guard.

    Atlas Ocean Racing, Maxime Grimard, and Gilles Barbot (owner and official skipper of the boat), the insurance company and local experts, are actively seeking the most cost-efficient and practical solutions to recover what's left of the boat as soon as possible.

    We will keep you informed of the next steps in the recovery of the shipwreck. The goal is to return the boat ashore for inspection and evaluation of damage and potential repairs.

    Pretty discouraging': Looters ransack sailboat that ran aground off Lunenburg

    Crew from a sailboat that ran aground early Wednesday morning off Lunenburg got another blow when they returned to the site to clean up waste and collect any salvageable items on Friday.

    Looters had ransacked the boat, stripping even ropes and shackles from the damaged vessel.

    'I think it's way more heartbreaking to see that kind of behaviour in these conditions than the accident'," said Maxime Grimard, skipper of the Esprit de Corps IV.

    "On top of that kind of trauma, you come back and your boat's been looted. So that's that's pretty discouraging."

    The 19˝-metre sailboat ran aground on Cross Island in high winds and rough water after a sail went overboard and was caught in the boat's propeller.

    Thieves stole safety equipment, a life-raft, harnesses, shackles, ropes, "anything of value," as well as leaving the vessel's boom unsecured and flapping, he said.

    "It's not just about getting valuables from a boat, it's also making it more complicated for us to co-ordinate the salvage of the boat," Grimard said.

    "We wanted to bring more stability to the boat itself itself ... we were hoping to use some of the ropes that were onboard as well. So I mean it's not just about the valuables. It's really about making all this more complicated in this situation, which is already complicated."

    While the vessel's insurer is sorting out losses, Grimard and others are keeping an eye on social media sites that deal with resale items, where the stolen gear might be advertised.

    Grimard speculated that the person or persons involved would know coastline and have a "strong, powerful" boat as well as knowledge of what would be worth taking such as hardware like shackles and blocks.

    "There's not really something we can do in terms of legal action. We can't really call the police for that kind of thing. We just have to be very careful about what do we see and we are actually hoping for solidarity from the people around the [Mahone] bay," he said.

    "We're keeping our chin up. We have lots of support here from the locals from all backgrounds."

    Most of the crew is from Quebec. They were sailing to Canada from Bermuda.

    Esprit de Corps II A Total Loss




    It's a heartbreaking sight with which we now must live and carry on. Le wreck was moved from the rocks on Sunday by Trident Marine, a local company, and is finally on hard since this morning.

    The poor and changing weather from the last days made the wreck removal company change their approach a couple of times to ensure a safe operation. The team's insurance company declared the yacht a Total Loss, and she won't be repaired.











    We've done everything we could, beyond our legal responsibilities, to clean up and preserve the surroundings of Cross Island. Since last Sunday this mission has been transferred to the removal company and the insurance company. You donations in our crowd-funding campaign are still valuable to help us finance our sustainable initiatives, and the campaign will go on until next Sunday.




    We're now focused on getting Esprit de Corps III ready to be launched at the end of the month. Our next objective is to be on the starting line of the Lake Ontario Offshore Racing 300 Challenge in Toronto on July 13th !

    We'll keep in memory the great successes we had with Esprit de Corps IV but "Show Must Go On" !
