  • Ben Braden ('Ballard Sailor' - PNW Editor on Pressure Drop)

    Surfing off the Elwha river

Ben Braden is best known in the Pacific Northwest for his unique racing style: winning races with a BBQ on the transom. Ben has been sailing since before his first memory, growing up on an island beach to the west of Seattle, Washington. That early start got him involved with Port Madison Yacht Club's Junior program, actually helping create the junior yacht club back in the early 80’s. From this kick start Ben learned to sail from some local PMYC Greats; Howard Frye, Suzy Kaseler, Tad and Joyce Lahmon, Tom Henderson and Paul Faget (to name a few).

First to finish Race to the Straits 2004

Educated - after 5 years working and surfing the PNW - at WSU, Ben returned to the Seattle area moved onto his 1st of 3 live-aboard sailboats, met his wonderful wife Jennifer and purchased their first family race boat, an Evelyn 26 dagger board, ‘Finesse.’ Doing well with the boat and Jennifer becoming more experienced had the two of them looking for something more exciting, something that you can keep the chute up in 35 knots of breeze. On came the Moore 24, ‘More Uff Da,’ “you always need more uff da, want more uff da, or have more uff da.” You’ll find Ben and Jennifer racing their little Moore 24 in races from the bay area all the way up into southern British Columbia, Canada - spending most of their time in their home waters off Seattle, Washington: with the BBQ on the transom of course.

As the Pacific Northwest Editor to Pressure-drop.us you find Ben’s writings under the ‘Ballard Sailor’ author as well as the blogs of his summer cruise of 2010. You will also find some of his articles, along with Jan’s great photo’s, within such magazines as Northwest Yachting, Sail and Sailing Magazine. Creating the Northwest Moore 24 fleet and Website (nw.moore24.org), the Get Out The Boat campaign, the PNW I.O.R. Rendezvous, the Three Buoy Fiasco (PNW's) and various other PNW races - Ben focuses on promoting sailing and racing of all kinds.

Currently, 2012 Ben is taking some time off to cruise the East coast for the summer and live and learn a bit of the East Coast Maritime history. In 2010/2011, Ben took some time off to sail, race, write and snowboard. Living on an old Wasa 38, you’ll find Ben, Jennifer and MacIntosh out on the water both racing and cruising on many different boats. When not on the water you may run into Ben, Jennifer and MacIntosh up at Stevens Pass Resort snowboarding and volunteering for Outdoors for All.
